Fairytale Castle - Fussen, Germany

We arrived in Fussen with the rain continuing to pour down.  This meant most of the day was spent in the car keeping out of the rain. We decided make use of having a station wagon and slept in the back of the car,  not a great nights sleep!  The airbed was wedged in pretty tight and our damp camping gear packed in the front seat made it a damp and stuffy night.

The following morning the rain had stopped and mad King Ludwig's castle was high on the list to visit.  Ludwig was the last king of Bavaria and had an obsession with swans and opera.   Unfortunately his Castle Neuschwanstein wasn't finished before Ludwig was mysteriously found drowned in a nearly lake.

Apparently, this is the castle Disney based the Fantasyland castle on. However as we approached it, all we could see was grey pillars that looked suspiciously like scaffolding.  (This seems to be a curse for us as Cristo Redentor in Rio was covered in scaffold during our South America trip 2 years ago).  Turns out the castle was only partly covered up so we could still see most of it.  Plus it was only a 20 minute walk from another castle Hohenschwangau Castle) where Ludwig spent his childhood so we got to see two great castles.
